Tips for Successful Dress Shopping

Approaching numerous Christmas parties, gatherings, and nights out also means that most people will be approaching a brand new party dress.

Dresses are the go-to party outfit of the Christmas season, and there are so many options available, it can sometimes be hard to know what to go for. The major high-street dress shops draw your eye with a range of dresses that range from fun and sparkly, to elegant and glamorous, and everything in between, and suddenly you’re now not at all sure what to wear your Christmas party. Maybe you would usually stay clear of anything covered in sequins, but the Christmas adverts and window displays make you think otherwise? Or maybe you are usually quite a casual dresser, but the festive party atmosphere has you considering sweeping ball gowns?

It can be hard to remain true to your style at this time of year, with a plethora of colours and cuts to catch your eye, which are not really available through the rest of the year. While it can be exciting to stray a little outside of your comfort zone, especially at Christmas, you must try to remain a little level-headed, as buying a dress on the spur of the moment can turn to disaster when you put it on before the party and suddenly feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. You will no doubt look lovely, but if you don’t feel right, you will not enjoy your evening as much.

It is a good idea to give a little thought to the style of dress you want before you head out dress shopping, otherwise it is easier to become overwhelmed by everything on offer, rather than efficiently eliminating certain styles before you even get started. If your Christmas party is a formal occasion, consider a long elegant dress, if you are concerned about problem areas, think about going for a dress that covers these, such as long sleeves or a wrap around dress. Similarly, give some thought to the venue you will partying in; if you are heading to a hotel or a ballroom, then a formal dress is suitable, but if you are going out for a local meal and a few drinks, a sparkly party dress may seem like you are a bit overdressed.

When heading out dress shopping, it is also a good idea to take a friend. Bringing a friend along will mean that you can get a second opinion on dresses you want to try on, and they can often suggest other dresses that you may never have considered previously, as well as boosting your confidence when you are unsure if a particular dress suits you.

Of course, dress shopping isn’t a mandatory activity before a Christmas party, and you might find that you can easily breathe life in to an older dress with new accessories, such as a statement necklace or a pair of sparkly earrings. Additionally, if you are having real trouble shopping for a dress, then you could consider forgoing the dress altogether and opting for a pretty top worn with a skirt, trousers, or leggings.
